"Yoda In chapter 2, it says hinging controls trajectory. So, my ealier post describing how it FEELS to me to shape a shot, was my attempt to validate what I am already doing, with TGM concepts.
Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself....in our class room.
Hinging controls the Clubface alignment through Impact. With HorizontalHinging, the Clubface only closes. Hence there be only one trajectoryfor each Club at its true loft, i.e., no Hood and no Layback. They say thatHogan used to "bore one hole in the sky, shot after shot." Thatconsistent trajectory is the product of Horizontal Hinging, where errors inthe Opening and Closing of the Clubface tend to produce errors in direction,but not in trajectory (which would require some Laying Back of theClubface, which by definition, the Horizontal Hinge never produces).
With Vertical Hinging, on the other hand, we have the opposite effect. Here theClubface never opens and closes; instead, it is constantly Laying Back.Therefore, errors (more or less Layback) do produce erratic trajectories,but consistent direction. The same effect is also true for Angled Hinging,which features both Closing and Layback.
Despite the potential for altering trajectories with both Vertical and AngledHinging with Ball Placement -- the further forward, the more the Laying BackClubface will have increased its loft -- it is best to think of Hinge Actionas controlling the Clubface alignment. That is the defining characteristicof Hinge Action. Any trajectory considerations will normally be a product ofthe Hinge Action itself, i.e., higher Ball Flight for Vertical Hinging becauseof its Layback and less so for Horizontal Hinging which has none.
