Given his strong finish this week I'd like to ask for opinions on Mathew Goggin. I watched him come up through the amateur ranks and so he's been a bit of an idol of mine all that time. His ballstriking is very very good. I'v watched him many times where he barely misses a shot for the entire round. His ball flight with driver is as good as any. So much so that I was once walking around the Australian Open with Steve Bann and Dale Lynch (coaches to Appleby, Ogilvy, Choi, Allenby (though not so much anymore)) and they remarked that many regard him as the best power driver on tour.
Year after year I watch him closely and he's right up there in ballstriking and about 180th in putting. This year he's found something on the greens (though still marginally better than average by tour standards) and so is having a bit more success.
I haven't been able to watch him too much because I live on the same remote little island that he grew up on so.... I'd love to hear any insights, stories etc of others who have become fans and perhaps even some technical comments on his wonderfully efficient golf swing.
In my defence, though without having been able to watch the US Tour where I'm currently living, I'd guess that, like all of us, he wouldn't hit it quite as good while in contention and on tv because it is new territory somewhat for him. He has had heaps of top tens and been on tour for quite a few years but I think it's only now that he really thinks he can win 'out here' and so probably putting some extra pressure on himself.
