LOPATCONG, NJ. – The Architects Golf Club has been the site of good golf for the International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) in the past, and 2011 was no exception. Some of the best golfers from Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey came to battle at the famed New Jersey course this past weekend. Low scores were posted both days, and players had to make a lot of birdies if they wanted to have a chance at the title. Large galleries filled the fairways both days, which made the atmosphere fun for all competitors.
In the Boys 15-19 Division, Sean Elliott of Westfield, NJ prevailed over his competitors for the victory. Elliott fired an opening round 71 and a final round 72, for a two-day total of 143 (1-over par). Elliott credited his ball-striking as the key to his victory. “I hit 15 greens on Saturday and 13 or 14 greens today. I gave myself a lot of good looks at birdie.” Finishing in second place was Jake Goldenring of Florham Park, NJ. Goldenring almost pulled off the comeback victory, shooting rounds of 73 and 71, for a total of 144 (2-over par). Rounding out the top three were Colin McDade of Rye, NY and Matt Plummer of Mechanicsburg, PA, who both fired two-day totals of 145, 3-over par. Plummer fired an impressive final round 67 (4-under par), which was good enough to take home the Druh Belts Low Final Round Belt.
After the round Elliott shared his secret to success with us. “On Saturday, I had to keep the ball low to stay out of the wind. The par 3’s were key for me during the first round.” This was Elliot’s first victory of the spring, and he looks forward to bringing home another championship in the near future.
